The
History Of
Sweet
Home Free Will Baptist Church
The Sweet Home Free
Will Baptist Church was organized in January 1909 in the home of Mr. & Mrs.
Van Swanigan of Summit with the following persons in attendance: Mr. & Mrs.
Van Swanigan, Mrs. Judy Marsalis, Mrs. Barbara Mingo and son Isom, and Ms.
Charity Marsalis Brown; the following Ministers: A.A. McCray and Square
Williams and there may have been others, but this information was given by
the only survivor of the organization.
Mrs. Laura
Swanigan supplied the name, Sweet Home, which she thought was fitting and
beautiful. The church site was purchased and enough land to become a
Cemetery.
The late Rev. A.A.
McCray was the first pastor followed by others.
In later years the
original building was destroyed by fire as a result of lightening. After the
fire the members erected a “Brush Harbor” and this is where worship was held
until another building could be erected.
Sweet Home Church
has had its victory and defeat. But by being built on the Rock, which is
Christ, it cannot fail.
Various
ministers have served this church and members have come and gone. The Hood,
Patrick, Thompson and Nash Family’s and its descendants have been bulwarks
down through time and kept the church in operation to the present time with
their aid and cooperation of others members and friends.
